Victorian spool-turned style
1850-1880

This style was the first consistently factory-manufactured and mass-produced. It is simple of design, and of usable size.

There are three typical variations for the low beds.

Tables are of two kinds - the four-legged and trestle; the latter in a small size often part of a matchingbedroom set. Not all furniture forms found in this group; beds and tables most numerous pieces.

Wood - black walnut, maple, birch or other common native hardwoods; mahogany for small occasional tables

Construction -spool turnings for legs, trestle supports, bedposts, uprights and spindles, always in identical repeating units; motifs bobbin, knob, button, sausage, vase-and-ring and two balls separated by thin rings; piecesstructurally simple with rectangular outline

Decoration -chiefly that of spool turnings; contrasting turnings for spindles; steeple-turned finials; spool-turned quadrants connecting posts and top rails of some beds and daybeds; moldings of split spool turnings;spool-turned crestings
