Illustrated FURNITURE Glossary .

Bulbous

A heavy, melon-like wood turning resembling a bulb that was popular for furniture supports and bases during the early Renaissance in Holland, England, France, and Italy, and common to most European styles from the Renaissance on.

The Dutch passed it on to the English, who made it an outstanding characteristic of their furniture in the 16th and 17th centuries.
