Wilson Greatbatch of Clarence is inducted into the National Inventors Hall of Fame: "Greatbatch did not invent the pacemaker or even the internal pacemaker. These had been invented by others with limited success. HE IS the person most responsible for creating a RELIABLE internal pacemaker. His work to develop and use the lithium iodide cell was genius and has become the standard in the industry." - Phil  Kinecki

Pilot Field, home of the Buffalo Bisons baseball team, opens amid hopes that it will help the city attract a Major League baseball team.



Buffalo Bills' Bruce Smith receives Pro Bowl Outstanding Player Award


Buildings erected:

1989

Walden Galleria, the area's largest enclosed shopping center, opens in Cheektowga and forever changes Buffalo retailing.


Ana Cotton and Lucy Falzone organize a community center for Puerto Rican and Italian Americans on the Lower West Side of Buffalo.


1990 World history: The World Wide Web/Internet protocol (HTTP) and WWW language (HTML) is established.

Buildings erected:

1991

Federal regulators seize $11.4 billion Goldome Savings Bank. It is the most costly savings bank failure in the United States. Goldome's end further fuels the expansion of M&T Bank and Key Bank which acquire Goldome's consumer banking business.

Ford Motor CO., with 2,460 employees at the Hamburg stamping plant, says it will invest up to $250 million to upgrade the plant.

1993

Buffalo hosts the World University Games which attracts athletes from 130 countries, but with no major sponsors, the 11-day event leaves deficit of between $2.9 million and $4.4 million.

1994 Adam, Meldrum and Anderson Company, Buffalo's last local department store, is purchased by the Bon Ton retail chain for $2.1 million cash and the assumption of $21 million of debt.

1995  

1996

The region gets its first gambling casino with the opening of Casino Niagara in Niagara Falls, Ont.




Marine Midland Arena, home of the Buffalo Sabers and other professional sports teams, opens. The arena is part of the revitalization plan for Buffalo It is initially named Marine Midland Arena and later will be changed to HSBC Arena.



In the years between 1992-1996, a team of Canadian archaeologists uncovered one of the largest prehistoric aboriginal discoveries in northeastern North America along the banks of the Niagara River, in Ft. Erie, Ontario and adjacent to the international Peace Bridge.

1997

Buffalo Niagara International Airport opens. The first official Buffalo airport opened in 1926.


Roswell Park Institute completes a $213 million expansion and renovation.

1998

Western New York's major hospitals undergo revolutionary change. In separate actions,

  • the Catholic Health System involving five hospitals and nearly 100 ancillary health care services in Buffalo and surrounding area merge.
  • Buffalo General Health System, Millard Fillmore Health System, Children's Hospital of Buffalo and DeGraff Memorial Hospital create CGF Health System later to be renamed Kaleida Health.

1999

Marine Midland Bank ,whose origin dates to 1850 in Buffalo, changes to HSBC Bank USA, linking its identity to that of its globally focused British parent, HSBC.


Noted social documentary Buffalo photographer Milton Rogovin and his family donate his photographic archives to the Library of Congress.

2000
